Welcome to My City: Austin Edition

There’s always something new taking shape in Austin. 

With a growing skyline, plenty of personality, and a mix of cultures that make the city distinctly its own, the city is also home to some exciting work for Power Design. So, who better to show us around than someone who gets to experience both sides of it every day?

Power Design Superintendent Rudy Guerra has had a front-row seat to Austin’s changes, working on projects across the area and becoming part of the tight-knit team behind them. Along the way, he’s gotten to know the city beyond the jobsites, too – from the neighborhoods and local spots he loves to the culture and community that make Austin feel like home.

Building Big in Austin

Rudy has worked on three projects in the Austin area, including two in Cedar Park and his current project at the University of Texas at Austin, where he’s spent the past two years working with modular construction – a building method that was completely new to him when he started.

“It’s still a learning process every day,” Rudy shared. “I’m really proud to be working here on campus. It means a lot for myself and for my family.”

And his project is just one piece of Power Design’s growing presence in the area. Look up around Austin and there’s a good chance you’ll spot our work. Power Design has helped bring some major additions to the Texas skyline to life, including Waterline and Sixth and Guadalupe – two of the tallest buildings in the state.

For Rudy, getting to be part of the team behind work of that scale is something worth taking pride in.

To have those projects under our belt here in Texas, in Austin specifically, it's a real honor to actually be part of the team that's doing stuff like that.

And there’s more ahead. Across Austin and Texas, Power Design is busy on projects at every stage – some nearing top out and others just getting started.

The Austin Experience

What stands out most to Rudy about Austin is its diversity – the feeling that wherever you go in the city, there’s a place for you.

On a summer day, you might find him around Barton Springs and Zilker Park, but he’s especially drawn to East Austin and its mix of long-term neighborhood culture and everything new happening around it. And when it’s time to grab a bite, Joe’s Bakery and a favorite downtown taqueria are at the top of his list.

For Rudy, it’s all part of what makes Austin special: a city full of opportunity, community and, in his words, “mucho, mucho cultura.”

Culture That Helps Build a City

That culture is also reflected on the jobsites helping shape Austin’s skyline. As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, it’s a chance to recognize the impact the Hispanic community has had on the city – and the values of family, hard work and community that Rudy sees reflected in the people helping build it.

Across our Austin projects, people from different backgrounds and cultures come together as one team with one goal: bringing some of the city’s biggest projects to life. And with more Power Design projects underway across Texas, there’s plenty more ahead.
